Blindfolded Birthday Adventure
by Jamie Canter on April 26th, 2015

My kids are signed up in everybody's birthday club:  Barnes & Noble, our local toys store, Toy-R-Us, etc.  And each year during their birthday month, they get birthday cards that invite them to come in and get something free or at a discount.  This year I decided to make an adventure out of going to all of the places that we had birthday treats for.  I loaded everyone up and blind-folded my soon-to-be 9 year old birthday son.  We set out on our adventure and didn't tell him where we were going.  Our first stop was Barnes & Noble where he had a free treat from the coffee shop.  He got picked out a treat (and so did we - ours was not free!).  Besides cookies and muffins, they also have Cheesecake Factory Cheesecake! Yum!  While here, I let him pick out a new book.  He chose a new Magic Treehouse book.

The next stop was a stop at our local toy store - Kaleidoscope Toys.  I love supporting local businesses and this one has a great selection of toys and unique items you won't find at the big box stores.  They are always hosting events, too.  Kids can come in and put together a bucket of toys they want and they will save it for friends and family to be able to get them gifts they want.  The store gives a $10 gift certificate and Jake used it to buy a cool light up football.

The third stop in our journey was to Academy.  We didn't have a birthday treat, but Jake needed new cleats for soccer, so I turned an errand into another stop in our adventure.

We ended our adventure by surprising him with takeout food from our favorite Mexican restaurant - La Margarita in Round Rock and Tres Leches Cake from Chuy's (it is so fabulous!).  We went home, ate dinner and he played football with his new football and cleats.

I am a big fan of keeping things simple and doable, so I didn't plan on having 10 stops and a bunch of activities in between.  That would wear both the kids and I out!  Just a few stops and a lot of fun!

We did this the following month with my other son and my daughter wants to do it too when her birthday rolls around.  Maybe it will become a birthday tradition.

Do you have any fun birthday activities or traditions?
